    Record of Chan Master Dahui Pujue

    Master Dahui was a prominent Chan master in the Song dynasty. He was a 12th generation linage holder in the Linji school - Yangchi branch of Chinese Chan Buddhism. He is famous for advocating the Huatou method of practice. Master Dahui was a significant figure in the Linji school. His Chan teaching method, which involved a special dialog between teacher and student, developed from the principle of Sudden Enlightenment. Then a special method of Chinese Chan - the Sudden Enlightenment method of Huatou emerged and became predominant in the Chan school.
    The Record of Chan Master Dahui Pujue is one of the most important writings in the Chan school. Not only did it establish a new system of Chan teaching but greatly influenced Chan scholarship, and broadened the popularity of Buddhism throughout society. During the last eight centuries, this teaching entered mainstream Buddhism.
